As a member of the Syrian Immunization Group (SIG), a campaign was designed to
carry out three Expanded Programs on Immunization (EPI) in hard to reach areas of the Afrin
city and countryside. The campaign was carried out in coordination with the United Nations
International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) and with the supervision of the World
Health Organisation (WHO).
The foundation of the EPI is to conduct routine immunizations. Vaccinations for measles,
rubella, diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, polio and tuberculosis are administered in schools, health
posts, health facilities and temporary sites throughout the district. The vaccinations are targeted
to children under five years old to prevent the spread of disease that is amplified in times of
The duration of the campaign lasted from May to December 2016. Over the course of
the campaign 32,380 individuals received the lifesaving vaccinations accounting for more than
80% of children under five years old.
